ARTICULATION JOINTS (AJ)

  Articulation joints (AJ) have become important and integral part of masonry structures except for class A or S classification. 

An articulation joint is a vertical gap between panels of brick wall so that the bricks can expand and contract with changes in temperature and/or allows for movement in the framework or footings. 

AJ prevents build-up of pressure and eventually cracking of walls, jamming windows/doors by accommodating the various movements that occur in a building. 

The soil classification and building configuration dictate the actual placement of articulation joints in a structure.

 Structural engineer determines the position of AJ with consideration of weak spots in the structure, such as: windows, doors, changes in thickness/height of masonry wall, etc'.

Articulation joints are tied at a specific intervals and sealed with filler.
